Open Duka Hackathon : 25th-26th October 2014

Posted on Updated on

What is Open duka?

It is a project designed by the Open Institute that will provide a freely accessible database of information on Kenyan entities. This information will provide citizens, journalists, and civic activists with a practical and easy-to-use tool to understand the ownership structure of the world they live in, demonstrating the practical applications of open information for normal citizens. It will serve as a core dataset for citizens, journalists, and civic activists who want to build 3rd party public transparency and public accountability apps or services, by allowing them to cross reference the Open Duka company shareholder data against other datasets.

What Is Open Duka Hackday all about?

The hackathon allows people ( Developers, Media, CSO’s, Data Handlers etc) to interact with the Open Duka platform in different ways from accessing new datasets, to using data to create new applications to contributing new data and ideas on making the platform more versatile.

What you shall get to learn…..

  •  Liberate Data : Data should be freely available. Open Duka requires more data to make it even more powerful. Help liberate data from books, PDFs and other obscure sources.
  • Create Apps. & Visualizations: Open Duka is a powerful platform. The hackathon will teach you to use the API to create applications and Visualizations.

This event is for: Everyone!

If you want to have an idea for using the Open Duka platform, its API, how it can add value to your work or industry, or simply want to see what’s happening, then definitely come participate! No matter your skillset or interests, we are encouraging organizers to foster opportunities for you to learn and help the Open Duka community grow.
