Strathmore University Joins the Fortinet Security Academy Program to Address the Cybersecurity Skills Gap in Kenya

• Strathmore University becomes the first academic institution in Kenya to join Fortinet’s Security Academy Program.

• Strathmore University-Kenya to be regional academy for students in East Africa.

Strathmore University has announced it has collaborated with Fortinet, a global leader in broad, integrated and automated cybersecurity solutions,
develop cybersecurity talent and help close the skills gap. Through Strathmore University’s Centre @iLabAfrica, which spearheads Research and Innovation, is the first academic institution in Kenya to join the Security Academy Program, part of Fortinet’s Network Security Expert (NSE
Training Institute.

Studying for an ICT course in Kenya today requires individuals to gain the necessary skills to operate, support and understand the complexities of next-generation security technologies and threats. This has led to the current strain the ICT security industry is experiencing as companies
face a lack of skilled professionals.

To help address the cybersecurity skills gap, Strathmore University joined the Fortinet NSE Training Institute’s Security Academy Program designed to provide industry-recognised cybersecurity training and Network Security Expert Certifications to students through theoretical and hands-on laboratory practice.

Through the Security Academy Program, participating Academies can leverage cybersecurity curriculum to equip their students with the knowledge and skills needed for their career. Students who go on to pass their Network Security Expert Certification exam are recognised in the industry among security professionals who are skilled in Fortinet’s network security products and solutions.

“We have noted an increase in employers seeking to hire employees with relevant cybersecurity As such, the collaboration with Fortinet will further assist us in equipping our students with in-demand cybersecurity skills employers seek. We look forward to numerous students benefiting annually from the Security Academy Program resources, leading to them joining the workforce and filling critical cybersecurity roles in Kenya,” states Dr. Joseph Sevilla, Director of the @iLabAfrica Research Centre-Strathmore University.

Fortinet’s Security Academy Program offers instructor training courses, Certifications and software licenses to colleges, universities and accredited institutions of higher education.“In this hyper-connected world, numerous security attacks are leading organisations to increase their demand for cybersecurity professionals. The courses that Fortinet and Strathmore will offer will help develop the cybersecurity skills needed to overcome the security challenges we face as a region,” says Richard Otolo, @iLabAfrica IT Security Centre Manager.

Helping Kenyan Companies fight Cybercrime

The overarching goal is to make it safer for Kenyans to access the internet without having their data compromised. The Strathmore ACPM SOC as a Service will provide the best way for companies to outsource their Security Monitoring by providing the benefits of 24/7 monitoring, decrease in cybersecurity threats to IT infrastructure, achieving regulatory compliance and Saving money.

The African market is experiencing significant rise in cybercrime due to fast-paced technological advances and companies are investing more in Cybersecurity experts to help prevent cyber-attacks.

The EAODF event seeks to provide a platform where people, civil society, journalists, and the private sector can engage in a public dialog on the power of open data to transform our communities, governments, and businesses. All of us can lead, partner, and work together to collect, publish, and share open data resources to drive sustainable development. Data is an untapped resource that can generate tremendous economic opportunity. It can open up trade, improve agricultural production, reduce hunger and poverty,make service delivery more efficient, empower women, and help us all prepare forclimate change.

AODC Mission

The 2014 Kenya Internet Governance Forum

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) has brought together people from government, private sector, technical community, academia and civil society to discuss Internet governance issues on an equal basis and through an open and inclusive process at a series of annual meetings since 2008 in an informal setting, free from binding negotiations.

This type of cooperative engagement is usually referred to as the multistakeholder model of Internet Governance, which is one of the key features for the Internet’s success. This model is paramount to ensure that the Internet remains sustainable for economic and social development.

The IGF is a unique platform for all stakeholders to openly exchange perspectives and concerns on key issues that may affect the future of the Internet for millions of Kenyans. Issues dealt by the IGF include: Privacy, Digital content, Human rights, and Interconnection.
